Lembar Informasi
Conditional sentence adalah kalimat pengandaian dalam
bahasa Inggris baik yang mungkin terjadi maupun yang tidak mungkin lagi
terjadi. Kalimat pengandaian digunakan
untuk menyatakan bahwa tindakan yang dinyatakan dalam klausa utama (tanpa jika)
hanya dapat terjadi jika kondisi tertentu yang dinyatakan (dalam klausa IF)
terpenuhi.
Dalam
bahasa Inggris tingkat dasar, biasanya ada tiga tipe kalimat pengandaian / if
clause yang umumnya dipelajari di Indonesia. Ketiga tipe itu adalah: conditional sentence type 1, conditional
sentence type 2, dan conditional
sentence type 3.
Conditional
SentenceType 1 adalah pengandaian yang mungkin saja terjadi
di masa depan atau dengan kata lain dengan menggunakan pengandaian tipe ini
kita sedang mengandaikan apa – apa saja keadaan yang mungkin terjadi di masa
depan nanti. Perlu diingat bahwa konsep masa depan pada konteks ini tidak harus
10 atau 15 tahun ke depan tetapi yang akan terjadi di waktu yang akan datang
bisa saja 2 menit lagi, besok, satu minggu lagi, dll.
Rumusnya adalah:

Fakta: Fakta dari if clause type ini biasa menggunakan
may, possible, probably, dan seiring dengan pengandainya. Jadi fakta dari if
clause di atas adalah: I may give her book next week.
Conditional
Sentence type 2
digunakan untuk menyatakn angan-angan dan pengandaian. Dalam banyak pelajaran
tema speaking English, types 2 ini sering digunakan untuk ungkapan suggestion
and advice.
Rumusnya adalah:
If + Simple Past Tense, Past Future Tense

kalimatnya sebagai berikut:
If I were you, I would get my hair cut. = Jika saya jadi kamu, saya akan memotong rambut saya.
If I had the time, I would take up golf. = Jika saya punya waktu, saya akan berlatih golf.
If I saw you more often, we could get to know each other better. = Jika saya melihat Anda lebih sering, kita bisa saling mengenal lebih baik.

Sentence type 3 ini digunakan untuk mengungkapkan suatu
penyesalan, yaitu mengharap kejadian di waktu lampau terjadi yang sebaliknya.

kalimatnya sebagai berikut:
If you had eaten your dinner, you wouldn’t have been hungry. = Jika Anda telah makan, Anda tidak akan pernah lapar.
